which was icing on the cake for us! She finished with all scores in the 192 and UP range. Chelsey got us HOOKED!!!
8. What were her (Pumpkin’s) strongest points?
Pumpkin was a determined little bitch, a very talented runner with a big heart, pet extraodinaire and strong competitor. Her greatest contribution was in the whelping box for us. While traveling to some field trials in the late 70"s, , we admired some of Paula and Linda Garwacki's, (Bitterblue) young running dogs. At the shows we attended at the time, there was one dog who REALLY impressed us with his good looks and athletic appearance..... Ch Hound Hill Strategist. We discovered that Paul and Linda's young dogs were sired by a SON of Strategist. We bred Pumpkin twice to this Strategist son - "Jerome" - Ch Saturn's Star Duster F Ch ROM . The first time she only produced 3 males, so later we repeated it and got a larger litter.
9. Did she pass this on the her puppies?
Breeding can be a science and you try to do your homework first, but sometimes there is some luck involved too. We were VERY lucky with Pumpkin. She gave us beauty, athleticism, wonderful personalities PLUS, good health, and longevity in her litters she produced for us. She passed more on to her puppies than we ever hoped for! She produced multiple Best in Fields, multiple LCM individuals, 4 breed champions, a Specialty Best in Show male with multiple Selects, a couple of CDs, a Top Ten Obedience and multiple Top Ten lure coursing individuals, two group placers, a 2-time BOB winner at the International Invitational, another BOB II winner, and a lot of joy for the people who had her pet puppies that never had the opportunity to show or run competitively. She passed on her longevity too - she lived to be almost 17.5 yrs old and most of her "kids" lived to at LEAST 15, 16, 16.5 . Her son Wistwind's Tyler CD, LCM II Can Fh. lived to be almost 17.5 and was a VERY special guy.
since we were very interested in this aspect, this was an important consideration for us. So we bred her and we kept 2 bitches - Wistwind Sunflower F CH, aka Cricket and Wistwind Morning Glory CD, LCM, ROMX , aka Pumpkin. Cricket was a fawn and white, and Pumpkin was a tiny little red and white bitch that made a big difference in our breeding program. We showed both of them a little when they were young and Jerry Edwards (Chummy's handler) offered to take Pumpkin and finish her for us. Since she was the first pup we kept from our first litter, I couldn't "let her go" with him.......... that was a mistake on my part as he probably would have finished her. Although having a "CH" in front of her name would have been wonderful, it wasn't a priority. We lure coursed her and she was good- very good. We took her to the Grand National in 1979 and she took 2nd all 3 days. We were VERY proud of her. She was in the Top 10 Whippets in Obedience too
