Hunts are in open territory on live game. This is done in our western and southwestern states. (USA)
Open field coursing most probably evolved from ranchers who used hounds to protect livestock as well
as crops from vermin. Hounds are run in braces or trios. Game is found by the gallery that walks the field with a huntmaster until the game is sighted. Once sighted, the hounds are slipped after a “fair law”.
Dogs are judged on Desire...10, Speed...25, Agility...25, Endurance...25, Touch/Take...15 for a total of
100 points and is a subjective judgement system.

NOFCA – Established 1964
Titles:
Coursing Champion - 100 points and receives at least 10 of the 100 in a regular breed stake, 10 of the 100 is a mixed stake, receives a first or two seconds in a regular stake, receives credit for one unassisted take or two assisted takes in any regular hunt.
Award of Coursing Merit (CM) - 100 points (Ch) in regular breed and takes a high breed award in NOFCA Hunts. One first place or two second places in regular breed stakes, credit for one unassisted take or two assisted takes in a regular hunt.
The GRAND COURSE is the National Championship and is held once a year over a three day period.
