start the exercise. This may create confusion and or boredom.
Eventually, out of frustration, I studied the AKC Obedience Regulation booklet and found nothing stating that I couldn't throw the dumbbell overhand. I consulted several seasoned trainers and was told it was not recommended. They felt that overhand throwing would result in less control. As I already had no control, I felt that I had nothing to lose and decided to give it a try. I started "chucking" the dumbbell overhand and placed it exactly where I wanted it, every time. I was amazed. We soon finished "Sally's" CDX.
I want to stress that I am NOT recommending this method. I have never seen anyone else throw a dumbbell overhand. What I do want to convey is that no matter what level you are working at, if you feel a different method of training or handling might be more effective for you and your dog and the rules allow it, don't be afraid to try it.

The most important thing is to know and read your dog and have fun!
With Open behind us, "Sally" went on to earn her UD in just six trials. She was featured in the Whippet Annual, as the only Whippet in 2006 to earn a Utility Title. It goes to show that sometimes unconventional methods can achieve the desired end result.
