gave glowing remarks for the all the class winners. The quality was VERY deep in the final bitch lineup and the nod for Winner’s Bitch was given to the fawn and white parti-color Open bitch Appraxin Southern Belle at Hi Tor, bred by Calvin Perry and Sue Rosenbeck and owned by  Patti Coles, Calvin Perry and Justin Smithey.  Reserve Winner’s Bitch went to the fawn brindle and white parti-color from the 12-18 mo bitch class, Bo Bett’s Lil’ Bit Country, owned and bred by Carol Harris.

*Of note, each year we try to add some humor to our specialty show with presentation of some clever animals to the judge.  One year we had a baby lamb, under Annie Clark in Arizona we had a sexy whippet dressed as a hooker, under Bo Bengston in Boston we had a Miniature Bull Terrier and this year Claire and the fancy got a “kick” out of the beautiful 3-legged whippet shown to her.

For the finale, the Best of Breed class included 43 dog and 52 bitch champions in addition to the Non-regular class winners.  She scrutinized each exhibit until she came up with a final lineup of 16 whippets in consideration for the top prize.  Newcombe found the fawn and white Junior Veteran Dog, Ch. Starline’s Masterpiece, owned by Mary Jean and Ed Odron and Lori Lawrence to be the most deserving of Best of Breed, National Specialty Best in Show and Best Veteran, while Best of Winners and Best of Opposite Sex was awarded to the Winner’s Bitch, Appraxin Southern Belle at
Hi Tor.  In high consideration for Best of Breed and honored with National Award of Merits were:  Ch. Merci Isle Dove Feathers, Ch. Festiva’s The Jury’s Been Suede, Ch. Royale Whippoorwill Cristalle, Ch. Tivio’s Fallingwater, Ch. Kamada Take The Money N Run, Ch. Shamasan Hound Hill Body and Soul JC, Ch. Bo Bett’s Lord of the Rings, Ch. Bo Bett’s Spotlight Pursuit, Ch. Harmony’s Bristol Crème and Ch. Sowagla Quick Silver to Taejaan.  Best Puppy was Kamada’s Dream Walkin’ and Best Bred By Exhibitor was Broadstrider’s Ocean of Diamonds.

The Best of Breed Winner, “Remy”, has an accomplished show record with Specialty and All-breed Best in Show wins, bred by Lori Lawrence, Daniel Lockhart and Cherie Virden.  He took time away from watching football on the couch and playing fun Police at the Odron’s to be exhibited to this exciting win by, Ed and best cheerleader, Mary Jean .

The Veteran Sweepstakes and progeny classes were judge by breeder Mary Dukes (Delacreme)  After a very thorough consideration of her accomplished 48 veterans, Dukes honored the fawn brindle and white bitch Multi-National Specialty Winner Ch. Whippletrees Icy Affire JC as her Best Veteran in Sweepstakes and the red and white male DC Summit Autumn Gabardine Martin CD LCM CAV as her Best Opposite in Veteran Sweepstakes.  Her progeny classes included 13 stud dogs, 12 brood bitches, 2 extended
generation brood bitches and their get.  Best Stud Dog went to DC Summit Autumn Gabardine Martin CD LCM CAV, Best Brood Bitch to be Ch. Lake’s Carry Beyond Music and Best Extended Generation Brood Bitch to be Ch. Brushwood Zoom of Tanglewynde.

To conclude the national specialty, the exhibitors enjoyed a beautiful elegant evening awards banquet with the highlighted announcement of the Top 20 Winner.  The competition took place on Friday evening and the winner was chosen by AKC Group licensed judge, Jacqueline Quiros Kubat (Dragonfly), Breeder judge Harriet Lee (Winsmith) and Handler judge Mary Dukes (Delacreme).  The 2006 Top 20 Winner was BIS Ch. Cariad’s No Doubt at Baccarat handled by Andy Linton and bred by Kim Pritchard and Terry Taft.   A special thanks to show chairman Kathy Rasmussen and her crew for the creative black and white color scheme (including black and white ribbons) and their true Kansan hospitality.
