Dear Whippet Friends,

Have you found www.TheWhippetArchives.net (TWA) yet? I came across the site a few weeks ago while doing pedigree research. This site is a FREE database with photo pedigrees that make it fun and easy to research Whippets.  It has the potential to be a fantastic resource tool since both adding and finding dogs is easy. Unfortunately, many of the images appearing on this site are stolen copyrighted material. In many cases, photo credits are given to the individual who has lifted the images.

Our discovery of the theft of images came while Phoebe Booth was visiting. I had asked her to bring along images from her collection to add. I called up the site to show her its contents. We excitedly cruised through dog after dog. Suddenly we came across a dog from the late 1970’s whose photo was credited to another source … but Phoebe had taken the photo and had the negatives in hand! We discovered this error occurring dog after dog. After many emails with the well-intended person who had posted the images, credit was finally given where credit was due. However, there is no way for us to know how many other photos she has posted claiming them to be her own property.

Further cruising of dogs found images that had been stolen from clearly copyrighted websites (owned by Donna Lynch, Iva Kimmelman, Beth Levine, and Phoebe Booth, to name a few). In conversations with each, they said that they had not given permission to copy their photos but gladly would have if only they had been asked. Additionally, this site holds many scanned images of printed matter with poorly reproduced copies of old dogs. Many of these images are stolen property of American Whippet Club copyrighted material (from “The Whippet News” and “Whippet Annuals”).

What a catch-22. This site could be a fantastic resource but in our opinions, it should be built legitimately, not through the theft of images.

Please, if you have a few moments, go to the TWA site. Look for your dogs. Are they on the site? If not, please do add them. If your dogs are already there, are the images of good quality, ones you approve of, and with proper credit given? If not, please rectify this by adding your photos and remember to give credit where it is due. If you have photographs of old dogs please add them also.

If you see a dog on another site that you think should be added to the archives, please contact that site’s owner for permission to repost it. Most are willing to share if they are asked!

Currently there are fields within the dog data to allow for photographer’s credit and for comments on the dog that relate to the photo (as in “Photo at 9 months”). I have written to the webmaster (Karin Schellner) and requested that she add a field that would allow credit to the person who is adding the photograph (as in “Courtesy of the Jane Doe Collection”). I have yet to hear back from her but I expect to soon. TWA is her labor of love and not a site that gives her financial gain so she responds to email as she has time to. I would like to clarify here that Ms. Schellner is NOT the party who has posted the hijacked photos that we discovered. They had been posted by another party who had credited the photos as if she had taken them herself.

What a great resource we have growing. Please help us build it responsibly!

Sincerely,

Lorie Crain
