concerned with the safety of the hound, we are also wanting the hound to show it’s natural ability. Keeping the lure 20-30 yards ahead of the lead hound, know where the turns are and showing those turns allows for the hound to shine.
Lure operating for whippets means you show the corners early, give the lure plenty of distance and slow it down as the course comes to an end . Do not stop the lure all of the sudden (huntmasters should not step on the line to stop the lure unless it is running into a pulley or the equipment - huntmaster training later).
One last comment – a great lure operator knows the “feel” of the lure operation. He knows the proper sound of the equipment he is using and the way the lure “lays” down on the field. If there is any change to that he must, must, be aware of the hounds position. If at any time he thinks a hound is in the line, he should stop the lure.
Be safe and wait for the “t in tally ho”.
