country.  Generally they (the blacks) were too weedy.  My dogs tended to have a fair amount of bone and substance and it worked on the blacks.  Black is a refining color and makes the bone on a dog look like less than it is, putting the color on dogs that had bone and substance, they did not look spidery.

7.  What were his/her strongest points?

Carol:  I had several dogs that I think gave a lot to the breed.  Ch Locar’s Dressed to Kill, ROM was a wonderful producer.  He was not a large dog, probably 20 inches at the shoulder.  He produced wonderful movement and type.  Unfortunately he lived in a time and location of another very popular stud dog, so few people used him.  He was only bred 8 or 9 times and produced 23 champions.

Ch Locar’s Martini on the Rocks, ROMX was a very good producer and he had group winners, SBIS winners in his progeny.  It was interesting that although Martin was an outcross and almost all of the bitches sent to him were outcrosses, he was dominate in producing his head and eye, length of body and his movement.

DC Locar’s Ferrari SC, FCH was one of my blacks.  He was not used a lot because he was black.  It was not until he was 10 years old that people really became interested in using him.  However, shortly afterwards he had to be neutered due to cancer.  It was a shame as he produced some lovely dogs.  However his “kids” are producing well for Fi.

I do not deny my bitches.  I had some wonderful bitches who produced very well.  Ch Roving Roadside Attraction ROM (one of my foundation bitches)  Ch Locar’s Opel Rose ROM (another one of my foundation bitches) Ch Locar’s Brittania ROM, Ch Locar Datani Total Eclipse ROM (was the beginning of my black line) and Ch Locar’s Chanel ROM were some of my really good producing bitches.  None of these bitches were ever bred more than 3 times.

8.  Which dog did you breed that you feel was your best Whippet?

Carol:  That is hard to say.  Certainly Ch Locar’s Royal Doulton did the most winning in his short career.  He was killed by a car when he was 2 ½ years old (his owner refused to get him a dog run and he got out along with her other dogs through a gate someone left Open.  Of course he was the only tragedy in the group.)  He produced some lovely puppies but was only bred like three times before he was killed.  He was a multiple group winner at a time when he was in competition with the Number 1 Afghan Hounds, Number 1 Ridgeback, Number 1 Bloodhound and number 1 Norwegian Elkhound.
Martin (Martini on the Rocks) was his grandson, but I did not special him.

9.  Is there any dog or bitch, not owned or bred by you that you feel is an outstanding representative of the breed?  Who?  Why?
Carol:  Ch Sportingfield’s Rock On comes to my mind.  He was a handsome stallion type dog with incredible easy side gait.  He will always be one of my favorites.

Ch Plumcreek Walk On Water, ROMX was an outstanding dog.  Again, beautiful side gait, but his producing ability was fantastic.  He was responsible for many of the top dogs for years and I still find him in many of the dogs that I have put up in recent years.

Ch Elysian A-Few Perrier, LCM ROMX was also one of my favorites.  Again a stallion type dog with easy ground covering side gait.

AM &JKC Bohem Circus Pony is a beautiful representative of our breed.  A good mover, handsome dog.  Unfortunately he lives in Japan so his contribution to the American bloodlines is limited.

Ch Roving Roulette… a beautiful brindle bitch with white trim (who I put up at the 89 National) was what I consider the breed should be.  Her producing was not spectacular, but as an exhibit she was close to perfect.

Ch Houndhill Brattleboro CD ROM was a handsome brindle dog.  He was an excellent producer and has been behind some of the top dogs in the country.  He himself was not specialed other than at local shows near his home.

Ch Bohem All About Eve ROMX. Not only was she an excellent producer but she was, in type and make up, a beautiful bitch.  Her head
